Many of us have become disconnected from our senses and our natural environment. Forest bathing is a wellness practice that involves gently slowing down our bodies and minds while using our senses to connect with the natural world.
Take some time out to reconnect to yourself and nature on the beautiful Waiheke Island.
This practice is inspired by Shinrin-Yoku 森林浴. Forest bathing is the literal translation of ‘Shinrin-Yoku’, which means “to take in or bathe in the forest atmosphere”. It is a recognised Japanese wellbeing practice that was developed in Japan in the early 1980s as a response to a growing public health crisis brought on by increased anxiety and stress-related illness, attributed to ever expanding urbanisation and working long overtime hours.
Many of us already know intuitively that being in nature is good for our bodies, hearts, spirits and minds. But there are also many scientific studies that demonstrate a wide array of health benefits.
Forest bathing can:
• Reduce stress, anxiety and depression
• Calm the nervous system
• Lower blood pressure
• Boost the immune system
• Improve sleep
• Enhance mental clarity and creativity
Forest bathing is not just good for us through re-establishing a connection with the natural world around us. We hope that through this re-connection, people might start taking better care of our planet which it so desperately needs.
Anna is a fully Certified Forest Therapy Guide. She trained through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guides and Programs. Anna has spent most of the last 18 years on Waiheke Island with some time in England. Anna has always loved being in nature and has done many long walks around the world and discovered the practice of Forest bathing in England in 2018. Find out more about Anna.
We will gather at our meeting spot for a brief introduction.
Working in partnership with nature, your guide will offer invitations designed to help us slow down, awaken our senses, and explore and engage with nature.
There will be chances for you to connect with nature on your own terms, in your own way.
There will also be opportunities to gather in a group and share with others.
All elements of the session are completely optional and offered as invitations only, so there is no need to participate in any aspect that does not call to you.
The whole session is for you to forget about your busy life, your to-do list and use all of your senses and immerse yourself in nature…. and RECONNECT.
It was more than I could have expected. For two hours Anna gently guided us through the quietness and beauty of the New Zealand Forest, the home of our beautiful native birds - Piwakawaka, Kereru, Tui and others.
As I silently took in the atmosphere around me, I had a very strong feeling of having “come home”, that this was in my blood. This beautiful therapy had brought out a dormant awareness in me. I cannot speak more highly of the experience and of Anna’s delightful guidance.
I felt very refreshed and relaxed, realising that most of my walks are hurried and my mind is distracted, and promising to try and remember what I had learnt that day, and immerse myself in my surroundings.
Thank you, Anna.
My walk with Anna was a truly special experience, made even more so as were accompanied for some time by several curious pīwakawaka! I enjoyed slowing down, playing with the wind and connecting with water on a more sensory level. I felt so grounded and serene afterwards.
Stepping into nature , with Anna as our guide, was my first experience of forest bathing. I loved every moment of being immersed in the forest, with all my senses tuned in. It was an opportunity to pause and reset away from the distractions of our busy lives. Anna was a wonderful guide, who has a deep connection with the environment, sharing her knowledge generously. This experience reawakened my own connection and love of our beautiful trees and forests.
Forest bathing with Anna was a new and refreshing experience in connecting with te taiao. Anna's expertise shone through in her attention to special details that created a seamless and special bathing experience. Being guided by Anna to be in relationship with Papatūānuku is a great way to relax and feel supported by the divine.
